Due to increasing transport volumes on inland waters, rivers and canals are being upgraded to grant access to bigger barges or allowing them to navigate with more loads.  This is also the case for the canal from Dourges to Valenciennes, where several bridges had to be raised and/or replaced.  Other reasons for the bridge exchange in Auby (France), were the bad condition of the bridge and ease of access to the nearby industrial zone.
